I must confess I just love Roz Chast's drawings and accompanying wry comments. I have read her material for years in the New Yorker and almost never fail to burst out laughing each time I see a RC drawing; the facial expressions on her subjects invariably are just precious and funny. So, I wanted to read this book because of my affection for her work. And yet, I found this book to be so much more. I think anyone who has lived in New York would have the same reaction. For under cover of a humor book, Chast has provided a valuable introduction to New York in a cartoon framework. For those unfamiliar with the city, they will find this very helpful--even though Chast maintains it is not a guidebook or insider view of the city. Here chapter titles tell it all: "Basic Layout of Manhattan" (the grid; role of cross streets); "Walking Around" (strange tiny stores; unique store fronts; the art of standpipes; frustration with tourists who refuse to cross against the light); "The Subway" (truly a masterful intro to this unique institution); "Stuff to Do" (an unlimited supply according to Chast); "Flora and Fauna" (70 parks and unlimited bugs); "Food" (a priceless study of diners); "Apartments" (challenges; finding one; role of Supers); and "Final Stoop" which discusses some timeless NY themes enunciated by E.B. White in his 1949 book, "Here is New York."If you have lived in the city, as have I, almost every page will bring a recollection and laugh of your own experiences. If you have never visited NY, Roz Chast really gives you the perspective of a happy native (albeit now a Connecticut suburbanite). Either way, enjoyable as can be and informative to boot.

Sadly, Going Into Town does not have the delightful idiosyncratic specificity of Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? which was just such a remarkable book. Going Into Town seemed cute but superficial compared to her other work. I wanted more of a sense of what New York means to her and more specific New York stories she experienced or witnessed (like the dialogue she overhears in the coffee shop). As someone who has lived in New York for some time now, I just felt like this book was too obvious and hardly scratched the surface of what it is like to live here. Yes, there are cockroaches. Yes, the subway lines are confusing at first. Yes, it's hard to find a good apartment. I really wanted more from Chast, whose work I admire and enjoy.

Roz Chast sees the world from a completely honest and joyfully cynical point of view. I thought I loved the book so much because I'm a Roz Chast fan and we're the same age and I'm a former New York dweller but my brother, who has never lived in New York and had never heard of her loved the book, too. She is an American treasure. I just can't get enough.

The best introduction to New York EVER. Give it to a kid going to college in New York or your friends taking their first trip there. Seriously, a Fodor’s or Michelin guide book is more reading than you have time for. Just read this before you go and you’ll have all the information you need to survive in New York, whether you’re going for the weekend or moving there forever. And it’s funny!

Since I've been feeling a little tired of New York City, I bought this book as an antidote. It really perked me up! I've been a fan of Roz Chast for years and after seeing her in a recent documentary, I was spurred to buy this book.

I love NYC and lived in Manhattan for 3 years while getting my bachelors & masters. I have been back to visit many times. I am now 74. Besides bringing a flood of wonderful memories, I loved how Roz Chast demystifies the the layout of NYC and captures the sense of specific locations and peculiarly unique aspects of the city. Her humor and artwork are great.

He loved it! He even teared up a few times. It clearly brought back lots of fond memories for him. Thoroughly recommend - plus I would recommend this if you are planning a visit for the first time - I learned a lot of NY insider info from this book!

A wonderful book for out of town guest to remember their visit to the Big Apple, but also a fun and informative book for those of us who live in the burbs and only get to Manhattan once in a while.
