When I purchased this I was almost giggling with excitement anticipating getting more instruction.Alas, I solved the 24 teaching puzzles without help and did not know how to study new techniques once I already finished the puzzle. I am disappointed about that. But the whole book has fun puzzles to solve, and they appear to be at my level with a little brain-squishing. I am currently practicing X-Wing, XY-Wing and Swordfish, the easier methods already under my belt. Large puzzle, one to a page.Update: I am now on puzzle #81 and getting a little bored. It seems to me that every puzzle has the same sort of solution to solve... after a while it gets redundant.Puzzle #95 is the best fun ever! Otherwise, it gets redundant... same resolution pattern for every puzzle.

I'm a huge sudoku fan and have bought (and finished) quite a few difficult sudoku books. In my mind, even the hardest books that I had seen previously (probably the NY Times Super Fiendish and Will Shortz's Terrifying Sudoku) were still not particularly hard. As a result, I wanted to find a book that would leave me stumped for hours. And I found it in "Sudoku Master Class"!I purchased both this book and Tom Sheldon's other book "Sudoku Genius" because he actually teaches you how to solve some of the more advanced puzzles. If you've solved a lot of sudoku puzzles, the actual strategies won't seem very new or surprising (and on some level, you've probably already used them on occasion), but he presents them very clearly. Now I use those strategies when dealing with hard puzzles. The biggest--and most appreciated--difference between his "Sudoku Genius" ("SG") and "Sudoku Master Class" ("SMC") books is that some "SG" puzzles require trailing. In other words, you must use trial and error to finish the puzzle. I've never been a fan of that, since it takes a lot of the logical analysis out. On the other hand, "SMC" specifically states that NO puzzles in the book require trailing.I've had the book for about two months and still have about ten puzzles unfinished, and this book has DEFINITELY kept me entertained and sometimes frustrated. So thank you, Tom Sheldon, and I look forward to your next book!

As someone who loved this author's "Sudoku Genius," and finally solved all puzzles in the book, I am finding this sequel hard going. Techniques like X-wing and (especially) swordfish are much easier on a computer than with paper and pencil. Still, the book helps much with progress in seeing these patterns, and I know I will improve as I slog through the more baffling grids. About half of the puzzles are solvable by meticulously applying normal advanced techniques. A special treat is the "study" section that gives one a hint to get past the "stuck" place. I found only one puzzle where the place I was stuck was not the place where the hint helped (my fault, I'm sure!).

If you're looking for a book that will help you improve your Sudoku technique, think twice before getting this one. Here's why:Strengths: Gives a clear explanation of basic methods (filling in the more obvious squares, pairs, triplets) and X-wing, swordfish, and uniqueness. The answers to the first 24 puzzles tell you where you're likely to get stuck and which method will get you past this, a very valuable teaching technique. Challenging puzzles; unless you're an expert, I doubt that you'll find any of them too easy. Puzzle grids are large enough so you can do the puzzles in the book without copying them on a separate piece of paper.Weaknesses: The instruction section is very brief (16 pages). Useful techniques included in other books are omitted. The author states, "[There] are a whole array of techniques--Forcing Chains, Coloring, Nishio, and so on--making up the logical twilight zone. I haven't included a discussion of them in this book, because these all involve an element of 'what would happen if . . .'" What Would Happen If is an important solving technique, and there's no reason not to have included some of it given the small size of the instruction section. At least the author should have provided a more accurate title, since I couldn't read this disclaimer on Amazon before buying the book. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the invaluable helpful hints are NOT included for the last 120 puzzles. In Sum: If you want one book that covers just about everything you need to know to solve Sudoku puzzles, get Mensa Guide To Solving Sudoku (blue cover) by Peter Gordon. Sudoku Master Class may help you by showing where you get stuck on the first 24 puzzles and how to deal with this, and it may entertain you by providing some additional challenging puzzles.

I love Tom Sheldon's sudoku books so much I wish he would make more. They are truly challenging and rewarding.

Good book

This a good book. Buy it.

Tom Sheldon's clever style is a most welcome addition to Sudoku Books. His Master Class techniques are straight forward and well presented. Puzzles are hard, but he gives you the necessary tools and walks you through the dicipline in order to solve. Very rewarding and great fun!
